Previously associated with TheatreWorks, Ivan Lim was one of the nine performers for Joavien Ng’s creation of Incarnation of the Beast. Despite knowing Isaac since secondary school days, the pair get to work with one another for the first time through Incarnation of the Beast. This time, Isaac takes on the role as a playwright, while Isaac acts as a child with special needs in the play. With the pair working together once again, we look forward to see what will spark in between them and the other members of the team.
“At first I was slightly confused, but as I read on, I fell in love with it. I am having a joy ride with this script. Every time I read the script, I find something new and after each rehearsal, I discover a new aspect of the character”.

1 Tell us more about yourself
I am a freelance actor who holds a BA (Hons) in Acting from University of Essex. I have accumulated much valuable work experience during and after my graduation, from being part of an ensemble, Mama Looking For Her Cat (directed by Benjamin Ho), to being part of Joavien Ng’s creation, Incarnation of the Beast. Besides acting, I also have a passion in floral arrangement.
2 What was your initial reaction upon first reading the script?
At first I was slightly confused, but as I read on, I fell in love with it. This script has so much potential. As an actor, I am having a joy ride with this script. Every time I read the script, I find something new and after each rehearsal, I discover a new aspect of the character.
3 Where did you draw inspiration from to bring your character to life?
Parts of it were from my childhood and people who were around back then. I had the pleasure to meet some children who have similar personalities to my character and I drew inspiration from there.
4 Are there challenges that you face while trying to portray the character?
Yes definitely, there are innocence and pure joy in the character, and these develop and grow till the end. On top of that, the character also have some mental obstacles, which I will need to portray. It was a challenge for me as I need to balance out the different aspects of the characters, so as to stay true to the script and character. I was also frustrated for not being able to express and understand the new emotions for the first time. However, the more I delve into the character, the more I find and see.
5 What is it like working with Pei Qin and Isaac?
I know Isaac all the way back from secondary school. However, I was only able to work with him during Incarnation of the Beast last year. During that production, we shared some personal stories and got to rub bodies and pile on each other.
I had the pleasure of being introduced to Pei Qin during an exchange of rehearsal space at Goodman Arts Centre (GAC). It has been so much fun and joy working with the both of them during the rehearsals so far. Isaac provided his insights, while Pei Qin supported and provided us with much space to explore and really have fun with the character while staying true to the script and her vision. I can’t wait for the upcoming rehearsals. It is people like them that makes working in this industry so much more fun. Love those crazy people.
